At least 13 militants killed in S. Afghan clashes

KABUL, May 12(Xinhua): At least 13 Taliban militants were killed after clashes erupted between police and militants in Afghanistan’s southern province of Kandahar on Saturday, Ministry of Interior Affairs said Sunday.

“Afghan National Police came in contact with militants in Nadir Khan village, Maruf district, Kandahar province; the clashes left 13 militants dead and nine others wounded,” the ministry said in a statement.

There were no casualties on the side of national police, the statement added.

Fighting rages across the war-torn country and clashes between security forces and Taliban have been continuing in at least 25 out of the country’s 34 provinces since early April when Taliban launched a yearly rebel offensie. The militant group has not made a comment on the report so far.

Gunmen ambushed the vehicle of Ghafor Khan, deputy director of intelligence department of the northern province of Baghlan.

“The attack occurred in Sang-e-Sorakh locality, Dushi district of Baghlan. The shooting left Khan and an intelligence officer on the vehicle seriously wounded. Unluckily, Khan succumbed to injuries at a hospital after the attack,” Shams Barakzai, deputy provincial council, told Xinhua.

No group has claimed the incidents but Taliban outfit routinely claims responsibility for targeted killings.

The Taliban-led insurgency has been rampant since early April when the militant group launched its annual rebel offensive, which had claimed hundreds of lives including militants, security personnel and civilians. Enditem
